Studiberia‘s ultimate guide to finding the perfect student accommodation in Spain.
So you’re going to Spain! You’ve got confirmation from your receiving university and are in the process of completing the myriad of administrative tasks required before hopping on the plane. However, the most daunting challenge still lies ahead: finding that perfect place to live. While this may seem like a tough challenge, with the help of this guide you’ll be settling into your new pad in the blink of an eye.
When looking for student accommodation in Spain, you have two options. Firstly, you can use one of the many flat sharing sites to find your perfect home, and book a room which will be ready for you to move into the moment you step off the plane. This is the more straightforward option, however it is important you take the time to settle any doubts with the landlord and ensure everything looks right, as you won’t have the chance to view the flat before making a decision. Alternatively, you can take the more adventurous option of booking a hostel or AirBnB for several nights, and viewing flats in person. Which option you choose depends entirely on your personal circumstances, and what you feel comfortable with.
Moving on to the platforms at your disposal when searching for that perfect flat, you really are spoiled for choice. Here are our personal favourites.
Idealista is a hugely popular real estate platform, with tens of thousands of listings up and down the length of Spain. It allows you to views hundreds of flats and rooms within the city you are travelling to, with the option of narrowing down your search to specific areas, perfect for finding a room as close to your faculty as possible. It also gives you the option of adding other parameters such as price range, female/male only flats, and landlords that permit smoking, etc.
You can save several rooms that catch your eye, then message the landlord through the site’s messaging service or WhatsApp to arrange a viewing, all from the comfort of your house or hostel.
Milanuncios could be described as Spain’s answer to Gumtree, a classified’s site with thousands of listings. The rooms and flats on this site are generally aimed at Spaniards, as opposed to international students. Therefore, there are some incredible deals to be found, and you are more likely to end up flatsharing with locals, which will do wonders for your language skills. On the flipside, if you are looking for a luxury room, Milanuncios is perhaps not your best bet.
If you’re looking for a flat with an international, multicultural flair, Erasmusu is the place to look. As the name suggests, the listings on this site are aimed at international students, which is reflected in the higher price. Unfortunately, the free version of Erasmusu doesn’t allow you to contact landlords directly to arrange a viewing. To do so, you’ll have to pay a subscription fee of 20 euros. However, it does let you book a room directly, so if you’re happy to reserve a room without seeing it, this could be the site for you.
Every University city in Spain boasts more than a few Facebook pages dedicated to listing accommodation. While perhaps more hit-and-miss than the other options, there are sure to be some hidden gems if you search for long enough. While renting through Facebook may not seem like the most secure option, it is a tried and tested method of finding affordable rooms. Facebook also has the advantage that contacting the landlord is as simple as sending a quick message via messenger to set up a viewing.
While not a nationwide option, if you are going to study in the Andalucían cities of Seville or Granada, these sister sites offer a limited but high-standard range of rooms in shared flats. However, there is no option to contact the landlord to arrange a viewing, so this platform is only viable if you want to reserve a room before arriving.
Have a browse through all of these sites and you’ll be sure to find your dream student accommodation in Spain, be it a flat, house or room, in no time at all!
