The Sierra Nevada is Spain’s towering mountain range located in the southern province of Granada, Andalusia. It is home to the two highest peaks on the Iberian peninsula, the famous Mulhacen and Pico Veleta. In the winter months, the Sierra Nevada offers over a 100km of skiable slopes, while hiking, climbing, cycling and many other outdoor sports are on offer year round. Less than an hour from Granada, and not too far from other Andalusian cities such as Seville and Córdoba, the Sierra Nevada is perfect for a quick break from city life. This is the only guide you need on what to do on a day trip to the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia.
The ski resort town of Pradollano is the bustling hub of the Sierra Nevada. The town offers everything you need for a fantastic day trip. If you’re planning on skiing or snowboarding, you can rent all the equipment you need from a myriad of rental shops, at a price that would barely get you a beer in the French Alps.
Pradollano will also satisfy all your food and drink needs. The town is full of exceptional bars, restaurants and churrerias, where you can settle down for a mulled wine or the classic burger and chips. Try Cafe Vertical for a cosy atmosphere and great food and drink. You’ll also find all the usual supermarkets available in any other Andalusian city.
From Pradollano, you can make your way up to the ‘Virgen de los Nieves‘ a picturesque statue marking the beginning of the route to the summit of Pico Veleta. This is the terminus for the bus from Granada bus station, so you can get dropped off and picked up here if you want to skip out Pradollano.
Just below the Virgen de los Nieves, you’ll find the albergue universitario, a rural hostel run by the University of Granada (ugr). Here, you can enjoy a cold beer in the sun, or huddle inside with a hot chocolate. It’s the perfect spot to wait for the bus home after a long day in the mountains.
At the Virgen de los Nieves, you can spend the day taking in the scenery, enjoying the row of bars by the roadside, and sledging down the slopes. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try the hike to the summit of Pico Veleta. The walk takes about 5 hours in total, although you’ll still get a pretty breath-taking view even if you only make it halfway up. Read more about this hike in our guide here.
This concludes our guide on what to do on a day trip to the Sierra Nevada, in Andalusia. Enjoy the snow and the sun!
